Central Lutheran Church

Tonacatepeque, November 1, 2009

We definitely had a Blast building those 2 homes at Tonacatepeque with Alex, Will, Jorge, and Luis! Thanks for all the singing, which made a true difference at the construction site, and for all the hard work you did! From the celebration at La Resurrection, eating pupusas with the Bishop Gómez. We hope this was an amazing trip for all of you and that you will remember it for a long time! Please, keep us in your prayers and we will keep you in ours. You are wonderful people that want to make a change in this world and we are glad that you’re joining us to do that! Until we meet again, many blessings!

John Kim's Team

San Vicente, October 28, 2009

Hey guys! I hope that you enjoyed your many interesting experiences with Habitat for Humanity El Salvador, including having a whole fish (eyes and all!) served for lunch. I know that during the course of your many adventures you were all able to make new friends, who will never ever forget any of you. Don’t forget that you all made a difference in the lives of the partner families. The effort you all made in moving building materials and digging foundations was inspirational for all of us. Thanks again for your hard work!

HFH Portland

Sonsonate, October 23, 2009

Between coconuts and crayons, we had an amazing week! We appreciate all the hard work you did in Izalco at Roberto’s and Marvin’s homes in Sonsonate. I know all the masons and helpers, especially Don Victor, Noé and David, are going to miss you a lot. We will always be thankful for your help at the construction sites! We hope that this experience has met all your expectations and more! We also hope that it has made you even more proud of the work that all Habitat affiliates around the world are accomplishing. We are glad to have had the opportunity to work together, and we’re sure that you didn’t miss the Portland rain too much. Thank you once again for all your hard work, and we hope to see you soon!

Gloria Halper's Team

San Vicente, October 15, 2009

The passion and hard work your group put in at San Vicente made it obvious that you had worked with Habitat before. I was very glad that I could meet people like you, and I am so happy that many of you are already involved with the Habitat family. I admire your commitment to the many families you have already worked with and to the families you will continue helping. I was amazed by everyone’s ability to understand the often complicated family trees of your many new Salvadoran friends! I was also excited to work with a team that seemed so interested in learning more about my country and culture. I am still sad that we did not have a chance to visit the ruins…maybe next time?! Thanks again for your help, and please come back soon!

World Habitat Day!

Today marks World Habitat Day! Designated by the United Nations as the first Monday of October every year, the purpose of this day is to reaffirm adequate shelter as a basic human right for everyone. Habitat for Humanity affiliates around the world are taking advantage of this special day in different ways in an effort to highlight substandard housing situations found globally. In El Salvador, we are celebrating World Habitat Day by hosting a construction team made up of members from various radio stations, who will use their media to help broadcast the work of Habitat El Salvador and the need for decent housing in this country. We invite you to join us in advocating for adequate housing.

Thanks!

CVT Team

Santa Ana, September 27, 2009

Hola a todos! How exciting it is to get to know a new country through its people. We appreciate the work you have done in El Salvador, and we hope that you enjoyed your time here. Thank you all for trying your best and for giving a bit of yourselves to the community every chance you had. Your smiles, donuts for the mason, and Nicole’s hugs and tears have made a difference in the lives of the community. The masons were thrilled to learn about American football, but they still insist it would be easier to tackle the other team. I hope that you enjoyed playing soccer with the masons and listening to music. Thank you for all that you have done and I can’t wait for you to return!

Photo Gallery problems...

Dear Habitat El Salvador supporters,

Unfortunately, we have been having technical issues with our online photo hosting website. We are aware that this is not an isolated problem, and is in fact affecting all users of the photo site. As a result, we are not able to upload the pictures for the last dozen or so blog entries. We hope that the site will be working properly again soon, so that we are able to upload all the pictures as soon as possible.

Thanks for your understanding!

Charlotte Model Community Update

The Board of Directors hosted a meeting with the newest inhabitants of the Villa Esperanza-Thrivent community on August 8th. This meeting was a chance for Board members to talk about upcoming projects and how to involve the new families.

On August 15th, Stove Team International (see previous entries for more details) gave another 10 families ecological stoves. The families are now using the stoves to satisfy their daily cooking needs and are demonstrating to other families how useful and ecologically friendly they are.

On August 16th, the community hosted a festival, where they crowned two children as the community’s King and Queen. There was also food and music, which provided the newest Villa Esperanza-Thrivent community members the opportunity to get to know the families of the Charlotte Model Community.

On August 25th, the Board of Directors presented their statutes to the local municipal government. The statutes were officially approved, making the Board one step closer to becoming a legally-recognized governing body (ADESCO). Now the Board members just have to present the statutes to the national government and await their publication in a national bulletin.

The solar pot project officially ended in August. This project included the training of 17 families in the use of solar-powered pots and also provided them with the pots and equipment necessary for use.

A new income-generating project for the community’s women is already underway. A furniture-maker is teaching the women to design, build, and paint furniture, which they can later sell to their neighbors, at local festivals, or in the market. The women have already made and sold several items and are looking forward to receiving more training in the coming months.

The slideshow below shows pictures of the Board of Directors and the Community Center, where they hold their meetings.

Rob Fitzsimmon's Team

Santa Ana, September 20, 2009

Hola Bob and team! It is great that you were able to visit our country and help build in the Villa Esperanza-Thrivent Community. It was truly amazing that everyone was able to be part of Bob’s birthday celebration, and I hope that everybody had fun! Granted, several of the masons ate too much birthday cake, but I think they learned that three pieces are enough. The freshly-baked donuts were also a big success and a nice way to help out Carlos’ family and the community. It was impressive to see how much work you put into the project. Brian, it was nice to see you again and be able visit with an old friend. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to get to know and share with the families you helped. Until next time!

Anita and Loren Sites

Santa Ana, September 13, 2009

These two extraordinary team leaders were memorable in so many ways: one of our few mother-son team leader combos; Anita returning to El Salvador for the umpteenth time; and one of our tallest volunteers ever! The rest of the team members were equally extraordinary and memorable, and we will always remember you for your hard work, cheerful personalities, boundless energy, and willingness to help. I was really happy to have had the opportunity to work with your teams to build “not houses but homes,” right?? I really enjoyed watching you all get to know the masons, family members, and Habitat El Salvador staff, and hope that you all have many happy memories of your week here. I know that I will see Anita again soon...and I hope to see the rest of you back here again soon too!

The Umaña Family

Flor de María, her husband Luis Raúl, and their three children are finally living in a safe, sturdy home. The entire family used to reside in a small, one-room structure made of sheet metal. During the rainy season water would infiltrate the leaky roof, turning the dirt floor into mud and wetting everyone and everything inside. In the dry, hot months, the inside of the metal structure felt like an oven. The family was desperately in need of better living conditions, which they were finally able to procure after learning about Habitat for Humanity El Salvador.

After hearing about Habitat on the radio, Flor decided to ask her mother and cousin for help.  Flor’s cousin, Gloria, agree to help fill out the paperwork and provide part of the monthly payments.  Flor’s mother, María del Carmen, recently immigrated to Santa Ana, California.  She is working in a hospital and also helping Flor to pay for the house.  Luis Raúl, who is a professional mason, helped build the house.  Flor provided snacks to the international volunteers who worked side-by-side with the masons as part of Habitat´s Building on Faith blitz build.  Flor, Raúl, and their children all remember the volunteers who worked so hard to help them.  They want the volunteers to know, “We will always remember you, and never forget the fun we had together.  Thank you for everything!”

Luis Raúl is a mason, but since he works on a project basis he is sometimes out of work.  Flor works as a maid.  Their oldest daughter, also named Flor de María, is 12 years old and in 4th grade; Jenifer Marlene is 11 and in 3rd grade; and six-year-old Juan Francisco is in 1st grade.  Flor says that her whole family is grateful to Habitat for providing them with an opportunity to become homeowners.  The new home is larger, safer, and more higencic than the metal shack they used to live in.  The family moved in as soon as construction was finished, and is very happy in their new home.

Sue Husar and Linda Hill's Teams

Santa Ana, September 6, 2009

Although it has been several weeks since your last trip, neither of your teams has been forgotten! I really enjoyed being able to show this small piece of Central America to all of the team members. It is always a treat to host returning volunteers because I get to witness some incredible reunions. And, of course, it is a joy to see so many new friendships created during the course of the week! Your masons, Matozo and Alcides, still remember you and hope that you have all recovered from your soccer game! Thanks so much for all your help, and I hope to see you all again soon.

April McKeegan's Team

Usulután, September 4, 2009

Hey tarantula team! Right now, all the cows, horses, dogs, cats, and (your favorite!) tarantulas are wondering where you went and when will you come back! Just so you know, though, it’s not just four- or eight-legged animals who are missing you—some of us two-legged creatures are hoping to see you again soon! Reyna, her husband, and her baby are so happy to have a decent home, and they say that they feel blessed to have shared your good humor and witnessed your hard work during the week. I hope that you all have lots of special memories of the (many-legged!) friends that you made here, the soccer and volleyball games, and of the construction process. Thanks for reminding me to keep on believing in my dreams and for making my job so easy. Hope to see you all again soon!

HFH South Shore

Ahuachapán, August 30, 2009

I know Dalila, her mother Dina, and her kids, Rafael and Pamela, had a most amazing week with you! Ana María and your masons, Daniel and Mario, were very impressed with all the work the three of you were able to accomplish. Despite all the girls talking endlessly to John, you were able to work hard and get a lot done. It is gratifying for us to see that even a small team can be very effective. Not even the hot weather and sudden rain could slow this group down! I hope that you will all keep the town of Chalchuapa in a very special place in your hearts, just as the people you helped will always remember and think of you. Habitat El Salvador can’t wait to host you again next year. Just remember to bring what we need: a tall, nice guy; a kind, bubbly lady; and a “hot” young guy (I didn’t say “hot;” that was Nick!) I will miss you lots and can’t wait to see you again next year!

HFH Charlotte…

Ahuachapán, August 22, 2009

…and our new friends from HFH of Forsyth County and the Peace Corps! This was definitely a team that will long be remembered! I know homeowners Darling and Rudy, as well as your mason don Marcos, will forever have some great memories of your team. El Porvenir will never be the same again! Thanks so much for your smiles and painting skills, which impressed even Marcos (the perfectionist!). I know he said “Buen trabajo” to all of you at least once! The soccer game was also a lot of fun; I hope that it was as enjoyable and memorable for you all as it was for us Salvadorans. All of us here at the Habitat El Salvador National Office and the Santa Ana Regional Office hope to see you again soon—and we are happy knowing that that day will come again soon!

The Medrano Family

Maria Elena Díaz de Medrano lives in Turin, Ahuachapán, with her three children: Adrian Fabricio, 13, Manuel, 6, and Lesly Yamilet, 16. Lesly and Adrian both study in seventh grade, and Manuel is in first grade. Maria Elena’s husband, Adrian Antonio, currently lives in Las Vegas, where he works as a welder. He is the sole provider for the family and hopes to return to El Salvador next year, when he has enough money saved to pay for the new Habitat home.

The family rented a home for 10 years. Maria Elena decided to buy a new house so that the family could invest in a home that will eventually be their own. She heard about Habitat through a cousin, who is also a Habitat beneficiary, and applied in October of 2008. The family had to wait until March 2009 to begin construction because they were saving for the down payment.

To fulfill the sweat equity requirement, Maria Elena paid two people to help with the construction. The house was finished in April 2009. Maria Elena appreciates Habitat’s rapid construction process and economic methods. A team of international volunteers spent a week helping to build the house, and the entire family remembers and misses them. Maria Elena says, “We didn’t want you to leave so soon, one week was not enough. Come back soon!” She remembers that her family cried when they were saying their goodbyes to the volunteers. Maria Elena and her children have stayed in touch with the volunteers through letters, and hope that one day they will all see each other again. The family also wants to thank the volunteers for their help, as they are very satisfied with their house. Maria Elena says that they are all extremely happy because the now live in their own house and have more privacy and more space.

Stockamp 2

Sonsonate, August 16, 2009

After moving all that material, I bet you have some nice muscles to show off to your friends and family! Despite having to haul materials around the side of the house for an entire week, this team was still able to accomplish a lot. Not even the sudden, heavy rain could stop this team! I know that the masons and the family members will remember you all for a long time to come. Also, I am proudly announcing that your team included our tallest volunteer in Habitat El Salvador history and that the mason decided to name Eric an official bricklayer! Thank you all for your hard work, enthusiasm, and flexibility throughout the week. Hope to see you soon!

Washington International School

San Vicente, August 16, 2009

It was a great pleasure to have the WIS volunteer group here in El Salvador! We were amazed to see these diverse high school students come and work so hard. These teens are something special: incredibly smart and friendly, not to mention lots of fun to spend a week with! You definitely liked to have fun together too. Between water balloon fights and intense lunchtime conversations, there was always something entertaining happening! We also liked that this group was very open to the Salvadoran culture and to trying new things. Whether taking a walk around the town or trying some typical Salvadoran dishes, you were eager to learn and enjoy as much of this small country as possible. You will be missed, and we hope that you can come back soon!

Linda Orantes' Team

La Paz, August 15, 2009

Hello team! I just want you all to know how happy the La Paz Regional Office staff was to have a chance to work with you. This was one of the few teams that lucked out in being assigned some of the easiest construction tasks, which is why we had some time to get to know the neighborhood where you worked. I hope that you enjoyed being able to share some special moments with the people here and that you never forget the new friends you made! It was very special for all of us to see this team finish the Habitat house; the masons, partner family, and I all thank you for your hard work. I hope that you all had a safe trip back home and that you are already planning your next trip!
